L'ATERLIER DU SEL BRITTANY FOR ALMA BAKERY

When commissioned to photograph traditional sea-salt production on the French Atlantic coast, I set out to capture more than a product. I wanted to reveal a heritage craft rooted in centuries of tradition. Working with salt-workers in the marshes and salt-pans of coastal France, the brief was to craft images that convey atmosphere, labour, and the elemental relationship between land, sea and salt. My approach blended documentary realism with aesthetic sensitivity: I documented the salt-pans at different times of day — soft sunrise light on water, the shimmering reflections of salt basins, hands raking salt by hand, and the textures of drying salt crystals. By focusing on human gestures, landscapes, and natural light, the final images communicate salt not as a commodity but as “white gold” — artisanal, place-specific and full of character. The imagery delivered to the client offers evocative assets ideal for editorial spreads, gourmet food campaigns, branding and storytelling. Positioning the salt and its producers as part of a living tradition rather than industrial production.
